German communication design has been highly regarded for decades. Nevertheless the exhibition “The Dimension of Plane – Communication Design in Germany” will be the first contemporary show on current trends in German communication design.

The exhibition, consisting of 150 recent works by influential designers, shows a comprehensive overview of current works by renowned design agencies such as Johannes Erler, Mike Meiré, Joachim Sauter, Erik Spiekmann and Andreas Uebele. Their particular strengths and specialisations highlight the five principles of two-dimensional communication design. The exhibition also captures where current trends come from and reflects on the effect of graphic and visual designs of the past continues to the present day. The powerful impact of logos, pictograms, typefaces or systems often only becomes apparent when they have been making their mark over for decades: the Deutsche Bank logo designed by Anton Stankowski in 1974, for example, or Otl Aicher’s pictograms – originally designed for the Munich Olympics in 1972, or the DIN typeface that directs drivers on German autobahns.
